Many young people in our society are increasingly being excluded or disengaging from mainstream education and are consequently at risk of further social exclusion once they enter adult life. These pupils have increasingly complex behavioural and social difficulties, including drug and alcohol-related problems. Many of them are involved with juvenile justice and a growing number are under the care of Health and Social Services. A very small, but worrying, number of pupils self-harm and need appropriate counselling support.

Alternative Education Projects have considerable success, verified by the ETI and Department of Education Research in re-engaging a considerable number of disaffected young people in education, be that academic or vocational, with most young people leaving the projects with some degree of qualification.
